The very idea

Defence secretary denies Trump is reason for UK defence spending boost

Defence Secretary John Healey has denied Donald Trump is the reason UK defence spending is being increased to 2.5% of GDP.

Asked by Wilfred Frost on Sky News Breakfast whether it is fair to say the UK would not be boosting defence spending if it were not for the US president, Mr Healey said: "No, it's not."

Of course not, there is no connection whatever, nobody could possibly believe otherwise, it is plainly a completely authentic, not at all rushed, long-cherished, necessary policy change, foreseen years ago during fourteen long, weary years of supine Tory profligacy, mapped out by top military experts using some of the funds generated by Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves and Prime Minister Sir Keir Spudgun and their wise oversight of economic policy.

As the song nearly asks "Who do you think you are kidding Mr Healey ...?"

This Government has steadfastly refused to bow to 'events' until now. The trip to see Trump must be a coincidence?

He could have done so much better at this.
"In a way, the sudden American about-face on Ukraine has meant that we and our European allies have all needed to reassess the threat from Russia and elsewhere, and an increased spending commitment will need to underpin any emerging reallocation of military resources. So, in an indirect way, it is down to President Trump, but rest assured that Keir is very much his own man on this, and that we will do our best to protect the hard-working people of this great nation, etc, etc, and if I keep this up it will soon be time for the weather forecast, etc, etc...."

It's obvious, though, that they haven't prepared for this at all.

And it will be interesting to see whether Trump allows him to give away Chagos. A nice reversal would be marvellously humiliating.

dearieme - ha ha, very good. He's unlikely to be kidding anyone, including himself.

DJ - yes, a complete coincidence, Sir Keir never kneels to 'events'.

Sam - no they haven't prepared for it at all, neither have they allowed for the possibility of not being permitted to give away Chagos.
