Starmer insists on security guarantee for Ukraine as he arrives in Washington for talks with Trump
Sir Keir Starmer is set to meet Donald Trump for the first time since the US president's inauguration last month.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has arrived in Washington for talks with US President Donald Trump, discussions that could help shape the relationship between the UK and the US for the next four years.
As everyone but Starmer knows, for anyone to insist on anything, there has to be something behind the insistence. In the case of his 'security guarantee', it isn't the EU chair-polishers he is so keen to snuggle up to.

I can just imagine Trump trying not to laugh
Bucko - I hope he does laugh, just when Starmer is being really, really serious.
Trump should cancel the meeting at the last minute and say he can't stand to face a devious communist. Rub his and his government's noses in dog shit.
Probably Trump doesn't know what blancmange is. He may be about to find out.
Starmer the busted flush.
This is where Sir Pink will find a use for his well-known love of kneeling.
But arguably Starmer is likely to misunderstand any jollity. Perhaps a table with models of all the American tanks at one end and all the UK tanks at the other would be a more concrete expression of proportionality.
The raw truth is that Trump doesn't need the UK or the EU to make America great again.
I would love to be a (metaphorical) fly on the wall in the room where The Donald is watching the front door video, modern equivalent of twitching the curtain.
Remember how Surkier's latest bff, Le Petit Napoleon, was treated. Bit like the Domino delivery boy.
Anon - he'll probably do it more diplomatically, but that's what he may do because he doesn't owe Starmer anything.
dearieme - "I hear you're a bit of a blancmange, Keir. Is that a good thing?"
James - busted, now we wait for the flush.
dearieme - he may as well kneel now he's given it a dummy run.
DJ - yes that is the raw truth and Trump has no reason to pretend otherwise.
Doonhamer - yes, it would be good to be a metaphorical fly on the wall, just to capture the atmosphere.
Starmer has so few options that his position is ridiculous. He might as well have had himself delivered to Trump bound hand and foot. Trump will have the last word on Chagos. And there's no way he can insist on a change of USA policy on Ukraine; he was just stupid enough to state his position earlier, and get it slapped down. Then there's the legality of the Apple request, which Tulsi Gabbard is investigating. And to make it personal, nearly every member of the cabinet, AND the Ambassador, has had their student union thoughts about Trump presented on the world stage.
