To *certain* people there is no point to having minions if they don't accept what they are told and are not willing to die for you. It's positively Medieval. That some alleged Socialists should hold these views looks weird on the surface... except the State has replaced the aristocracy.
You could argue that there is no such thing as the State (nor society), it's just men, women, and families. But that idea, taken seriously, is challenging to the assumed authority of The Zealots That Be. No wonder the Establishment was so critical of Margaret Thatcher's original words.
DJ - yes, among certain people there is a definite sense of "you don't keep a dog and bark yourself" around issues of political power.
Margaret Thatcher did highlight a problem with common abstract ideas such as 'society'. Our digital world seems to highlight the problem quite mercilessly when it comes to leadership.
Sam - ha ha, if only they were. Squaaaaad.......fall out! seems to be looming.
I'm sure Sir Pink Blancmange would send his son to war as long as the lad had the sole use of a Soho flat for a couple of months to prepare himself for the ordeal.
