Two Litmus Tests

Rwanda scheme is 'eye-wateringly mad and callous' says Emma Thompson

The Love Actually star said the government's approach does not reflect "the soul of this country" and added: "We can't become fortresses."

Some folk offer us a kind of litmus test for various projects, ideas and social trends. Emma Thompson's condemnation of the Rwanda scheme is an example. If she condemns the idea it must be better than detractors have claimed. It may still fail for political reasons but the Emma Test suggests it is basically sound.

Ministry of Defence acquires government's first quantum computer

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has acquired the government's first quantum computer.

Quantum computers can make very complex calculations extremely quickly and their creators say they can solve the problems regular computers cannot.

The MoD is another litmus test. I've read various articles on quantum computing and the tone of them ranges from it being the greatest thing since sliced bread to an idea which is fundamentally unsound. Endorsement by the MOD steers it towards the unsound end of the spectrum.

I wonder what Emma Thompson thinks of quantum computing?

Apart from being an actress, what qualifications and experience gives ET the authority to pontificate publicly on these matters?
It somehow reminds me of a schoolgirl, confused and indoctrinated by her ghastly parents, sounding off about warming or cooling - I care not which.

Emma Thompson has absolutely no reason to be talking about Government policy and sending illegal migrants to Rwanda. She has zero credentials in this area, and zero credibility.

Instead, we need to hear the views of Meryl Streep, who at least starred in "Out of Africa".

Am I thinking of some other luvvie or did she leave the country claiming she was going to live permanently in Italy? A Brexit hissy-fit, perhaps. Then came Covid and she legged it back to these islands, committing social distancing by retreating to her hideout in the Highlands. Could that have been her?

What they need in this day and age is a truly progressive computer. Unlike the old tech where you had positive and negative charges (1s and 0s) a modern progressive computer should allow the charges to self identify during the progress of calculation. I'm sure it will work and be in keeping with social policy.

Are you proposing a non-binary computer, Woodsy?

Ed - she reminds me of a confused and indoctrinated schoolgirl too. That absolute certainty which just doesn't reflect a mature outlook in an uncertain world.

Sam - although Emma has starred in Nanny McPhee - where it is possible for special people to make their own reality.

dearieme - it certainly could have been her. I wonder if she sailed from Italy to Scotland in a carbon neutral manner.

Woodsy and dearieme - that could be an interesting alternative to the bipolar computers running social media.

ET who conflates flying first class with saving the planet, a sort of thespian Marie Antoinette, 'let them eat cake'

Wiggia - she's probably worse than Marie Antoinette - doesn't think we should have cake either.
