After the holiday
A few days ago, Mrs H and I were discussing various holiday photos and how the holidays seem more enjoyable in retrospect than they did at the time. Presumably this is the fading affect bias (FAB) or rose-tinted spectacles as it used to be called.
Minor annoyances, weather not quite as good as it could have been, midges, not enough wardrobe space in the bedroom, the substandard café and traffic jams fade while the good bits do not.
It’s happening already with pandemic lockdown memories. The ludicrous maniacs who imposed it, the absurd restrictions, social distancing, masks, gargantuan quantities of money flushed down the toilet, GP services going into hibernation, pointless school closures, bizarre TV lectures, police informers – much of it is fading away.
Now I recall the local walks, the ease and convenience of supermarket delivery, the remarkable number of DIY jobs I managed to do around the house, coffee in the park at Matlock as restrictions eased and so on and so on.
Politically it’s not good though. We need to remember the bungling, undemocratic nonsense for what it was. We need an FAB vaccine. Perhaps in one sense that's what we had.

I suspect that politicians are helping the process along. All those difficulties we are facing now - fuel prices, inflation, an uncontrollable civil service, abusive police, strikes, useless services especially the NHS, increasingly poor mental health in children - none of that was caused by closing capitalism down for a couple of years, honest, guv.
And then there's the elevated rate of mortality with non-Covid causes. Clearly we are seeing Long Vaxx and Long Lockdown - which seem to be much deadlier than Long Covid.
We have yet to learn much about the health of infants who were born to vaccinated mothers. Nor have I seen any observational data on miscarriages in vaccinated women.
I have see some of the trial data on vaccinated pregnant women misreported in exaggerated, hysterical fashion. If those misreports were true there would have been hardly a baby born alive to vaccinated women - which just confirms that they are untrue.
And those wonderful quiet days with almost no traffic, no trains on the West main line near us, and stunning clear blue skies with no vapour trails causing high level misting. But we forget the inability to visit family, the lack of any holidays, theatres, places to visit or live music and the constant medical fearmongering. Rather like remembering our youth when all the days were sunny, warm, happy and filled with new experiences. Our brains seem to forget all the boring miserable ordinary everyday stuff.
Sam - yes it's remarkable how quickly the pandemic debacle has been swamped by other debacles. Almost as if the art of politics is to have another clutch of debacles to hand in order to swamp the last ones.
dearieme - yes we are seeing a range of non-Covid health issues plus others which are not all physical. I hear stories which sound like hypochondria taken to new levels.
Woodsy - it is rather like remembering our youth. Even winter was filled with crisp white snow, snowball fights and chestnuts roasted by the fire. Maybe it's the best way to remember things.
