Some blogs (not this one I might add) are more interesting as jumping off points - the blogroll. In others the comments are the best bit.

Roger - I agree, some blogs almost seem written to crank out the comments, which is involving for readers and commenters.

Other blogs feel more self-contained and comments can be quite difficult even if all you want to add is a note of appreciation.
