Burnham bows to Trump over Chagos deal
Andy Burnham is reviewing the Chagos Islands deal after Donald Trump said it was “terrible” in their first face-to-face meeting.
The Prime Minister said he was doing “everything possible to find a resolution to the issue”, opening the door to scrapping the deal he “inherited” from Sir Keir Starmer.
Mr Burnham reversed his position after a meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in which the US president suggested he should review the “ridiculous” agreement.

It should be interesting to see what happens to this when Burnham returns to base.

Politicians today have no strategic thinking on any subject whether home or abroad. They all seem to be obsessed with raising taxes no matter what the consequences and .giving all the money raised to foreigners, I am waiting for them to give way on slavery reparations.
If Burnham does scrap the deal, I imagine it will go down so badly with the left, we might be looking at another PM by next year, and the saga continuing.
Being told what to do by Donald Trump, will not be a good look
John - yes, no strategic thinking on any subject at all. React to the moment from a rigidly globalist perspective and that seems to be it.
Bucko - I agree, being told what to do by Donald Trump, won't look good. It's hard to see how he can do anything but back-peddle once he is back. Unless the government machine has shifted too and tells him how to sell it.
He will probably 'remain committed to the deal' but magically find reasons to delay progress for as long as Trump is president.
DJ - yes, he'll probably find ways to put it off while he deals with bus fares.
