Opportunity of a lifetime

'Opportunity of a lifetime' to live and work on remote UK island with no electricity, shops or cars

An 'opportunity of a lifetime' has come up for a family or couple to live and work on a remote island off the coast of Britain.

The island's officials are looking for people to join the small community on Bardsey Island (Ynys Enlli) and live virtually off-grid.

Situated off the Llŷn Peninsula in North Wales, the island has no electricity, shops, schools or cars.

A political opportunity of a lifetime too. Invaluable work experience for Ed Miliband and all members of the Climate Change Committee.

Their reports would be interesting.

Sounds like a great place until you realise it'll soon be full of migrants.

Anon - although that would be two policies Ed and the Climate Change Committee could experience personally.

I'll wager that while the "Island" might have no (mains?) electricity they won't be relying on candles and oil lamps. They'll have some basic power - probably solar & a small wind turbine feeding batteries and possibly inverters to give 230v AC mains. The island cafe has a Facebook page, and both "EE" & "3" show excellent mobile coverage. At the very least they will need something to power an emergency radio....

Dave - basic power would be fine for the experience, preferably through winter.

I would not mind betting that there are several diesel gennies thumping away in the background.

What is the point of applying for this? If Ed gets his way, soon we will all be living this way ......

John - I bet you are right, hidden away in a shed somewhere.

Anon - Ed should experience it first though, a five year stint should be enough.

I suppose I could deliver a consignment of coal with my canal boat?

Tammly - it might be better to hang on to the coal, you could be accused of carbon smuggling.
