Put not your trust in Ursula

Brussels to launch European space shield

Brussels is to build a European space shield under a wider scheme preparing the bloc for war with Russia within five years.

The space shield is one of four projects announced under the “Readiness 2030” roadmap that also includes a counter-drone system and fortifications on the bloc’s eastern borders “across land, air and sea”.

But with grim inevitability...

However, early discussions over the roadmap triggered tensions with Nato, the Western military alliance, because of duplications of its own defence plans for a potential attack by Russia.

Many of the schemes being discussed are considered the sole competence of Nato, which is made up of 23 EU members and nine other states.

If it's not going to be ready until 2030, I shall attack in 2029 at the latest.

John Turnbull - I have to say it is awfully obliging of the Europeans to give Russia notice of when to expect the next war, perhaps a little like the incident at Fontenoy or wherever it was where French and British officers deferred to each other as to who should shoot first.... "after you", "no, no after you".... all very civilised........

But, but, the projects have a roadmap, plan, and everything. What could possibly go wrong?

DAD - that's crafty, she didn't think of that.

John - and if there is a project timeline overrun (if?) it would be awfully obliging of Russia to adopt the new deadline - and the ones after that of course.

DJ - it's baffling, almost as if there is more to it than bureaucrats making decisions at meetings.

Tammly - she's thinking big now, it's wooden tanks and missiles.
