Not Needed

Investigation into Reeves not needed, says Starmer - after she apologises for rental 'mistake'

Sir Keir Starmer has dismissed calls for an investigation into his chancellor after she apologised for putting her family home up for rent without obtaining the necessary licence.

Some London boroughs require private landlords to obtain a specific kind of licence if they are putting their property up for rent - including Southwark Council, where Ms Reeves' home is listed.

It is mildly entertaining to imagine how righteously indignant "Sir" Keir would be about a Tory Chancellor making this 'mistake'. His eyes would gleam with confected outrage through Lord Alli's spectacles.

With her Budget coming up on November 26, Rachel from Rents should consider an early exit. She is the one who isn't needed and the whole world knows it.

I see TTK has now said he has complete confidence in her.

So she’ll be gone in a day or two, then.

Peter - oh dear that's not good, won't do her confidence any good, although she seems to have far too much of it anyway.

But, but, if Rachel from Accounts goes who will replace her? David Lammy? Dear Ed Miliband? Anyone who is halfway competent would be a danger to TTK and he has said he is looking to remain for 10 years!

Starmer seems to have bought into Reeves’ narrative of Schrödinger’s licence - the one she knew about but was simultaneously unaware of; still, it’s not as if she was seen eating a slice of cake, is it?

My guess is that all this has surfaced inconveniently early; after the budget, it might have been a resigning matter and, once she was out, all the budgetary disasters could have been neatly laid at her door.

Meanwhile, let us savour the thought that, should she be obliged to step down, there is currently a sitting tenant in her home and, once Labour’s ban on no-fault evictions comes into force, that tenant may be there to stay. While replacing a PM is a lengthy business allowing ample time for house-hunting, other offices of state can be changed at short notice; there’s surely a certain element of hubris in a Chancellor letting out her home.

DJ - it's an interesting question, it may have to be someone halfway competent and TTK would have to go along with it. I'm not sure if he'd recognise competence in other people though, he seems to be weird like that.

Macheath - ha ha, yes it must be Schrödinger’s licence, but as you say, eating cake is far worse. Interesting point about the house tenant because she could be gone in a day. What a pity.

Well said. And of course other things might be gleaming in Lord Ali's trousers.

dearieme - I hope nothing else is gleaming, especially in Lord Ali's trousers, especially with Halloween looming.
