It's crunch time again

World now in ‘crunch time’ to avoid higher levels of warming, UN scientists warn

Professor Joeri Rogelj, research director at the Grantham Institute, said: “Under any course of action, there is a very high chance that we will reach and even exceed 1.5C and even higher levels of warming.

“1.5C is an iconic level but we are currently already in crunch time… to avoid higher levels of warming with a decent likelihood or a prudent likelihood as well and that is true for 1.7C, but equally so for 1.8C if we want to have a high probability there.”

As we see from Google's Ngram Viewer, 'crunch time' occurrences rose rapidly from about 1980 to a peak in about 2011, since when there has been a slight decline. Almost as if the 'crunch time' rot set in round about 1980. Whatever the cause, we obviously need a more sustainable level of crunch times.

Now that's a Net Zero I could support.

Indeed it is desperate. Today I was forced to dig the electric fan out of the back of the cupboard, I may have to move my chocolate stash into the fridge and eat salads! The end times are clearly here.

I'd say we are definitely in lunch time. All the signs are there.

I have not heard of read of " The Tipping Point " for a few years. Have we already passed that Point?
I think it was considered to occur should the World's atmosphere level of CO2 ever reach 0.0004 (by weight? They never said.) And that would be it. End of all life on earth, Eiffel Tower top tip just poking above the waves.
Well it is now well above that Tipping Point level and all went silent. Climate Scientists still flew to all parts of the World for Climate Conferences. I say all parts of the World, but they seldom stray far from the Tropics now after the Copenhagen and Glasgow embarrassments.
N.B. The upper case letters are to show the severe level of crisis.
A " Crunch Time " I would more associate with an Ice Age and the approaching glaciers. The official scare up to 1970s. Read The Forgotten Enemy by Arthur C Clarke.
My olives and grapes still will not grow in my back yard.

decnine - I could too, Net Zero Crunch Times.

Woodsy - our chocolate stash is still in the pantry, but I'll keep an eye on, maybe unwrap some of it more often to check.

Sam - we've just had ours, a nice hot snack.

Doonhamer - I've just checked, there is a Kindle version of all Arthur C Clarke's short stories so The Forgotten Enemy should be in that. I'll download it and get back to some proper science fiction for a change.

If it’s hot weather you’re worried about, I have the perfect solution: move to the West Coast of Scotland.

Bah humbug.
