A Smaller Book of Less Amazing Stories

As the boundaries of knowledge have expanded, worlds of romance and adventure have contracted. Our understanding of space, spaceships and extra-terrestrial exploration have expanded to such a degree that imagination and adventure have a lesser role to play. The marvels of limitless possibility have been heavily eroded.

We associate these losses with childhood, but when they were lost, they were lost to technological progress and the expanded boundaries of ordinary life. There is no going back.

Ah! The marvels of imagination for children have moved to new areas, now it's all 'climate change' and 'saving the planet' - scope for limitless imagination.

"Our understanding of space, spaceships and extra-terrestrial exploration have expanded"

For the average Joe, I wouldn't say that. I'd say our understanding of Star Trek has expanded. And imagination and adventure have contracted because more and more we find ourselves saying, "That's been done on Star Trek"

Tammly - yes, even a child's imagination has to conform.

Bucko - you are probably right. A survey of how much people know about the subject could turn out to be depressing.
