New Zealand government plan to tax cow and sheep burps faces backlash
The proposal would provide financial incentives for farmers to use technology that reduces the amount of burps released from the animals.
"New Zealand's farmers are set to be the first in the world to reduce agricultural emissions, positioning our biggest export market for the competitive advantage that brings in a world increasingly discerning about the provenance of their food," Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said.
It's Jacinda again - had to be. Maybe voters need to become more discerning too. A good deal more discerning, as this idea does not even pretend to be motivated by voter interests.

Following the logic(!) then some endangered species (that produce methane for instance) will appear less worthy of protection. And next, people.

That's actually very good news for the planet. Consumers over here will find that the costs of the scheme have been passed on to them, and buy British beef and lamb and milk products. That will mean less CO2 transporting stuff from the antipodes, and Jacinda can be happy that she has helped the planet by busting her farmers.
The New Zealanders are actually sitting on a virtually carbon-free gold mine. Why doesn't Jacinda hire herself out as a global sadface? Nobody can look as sincerely sad and grief-stricken as her. Boris was useless at it, ditto for Truss, and Biden would have difficulties remembering what the emotion was. Putin is too botoxed. But every time there is a disaster, mass shooting, or famine, the country affected could pay her billions just to appear and say a few teary words.
