UK risks becoming failed state says failed PM

The public's trust in the way the UK is run is breaking down, former Labour prime minister Gordon Brown has warned.

He said Covid-19 had exposed "tensions" between Whitehall and the nations and regions, who were often treated by the centre as if they were "invisible".

Mr Brown is urging Prime Minister Boris Johnson to set up a commission to review how the country is governed...

He points to "bitter disputes" over issues such as lockdown restrictions and furlough and said unless underlying tensions were resolved, the UK risked becoming a "failed state".

Of course we are treated by the centre as if we are invisible, we learned all about that in the Blair/Brown years. It is a little rich of Brown to put it forward as a criticism now, but he knows that. It's a move in the game. An obvious move but they usually are.

Far more cronies could be employed if first we had a commission in each region of the UK as well as its dependencies, whatever Falklands, Gibraltar etc are called, each with representation from the EU and UN at each.
Whether Cornwall, Yorkshire, Northern Isles and other regions with some aspiration of independence should have there own commissions could be the subject of an initial full and comprehensive public and judicial inquiry.
By the time all that is complete, discussed and reviewed the offspring of cronies, the nouveaux cronieurs? could continue the ride on the chemin de fer de jus.
By the way, G"or"don, what is price of gold now?
Somebody, give him his meds and take him back to his home.

I've seen it suggested on Guido that the old loon might be pitching for leadership of the Scottish Labour Party, which might put it into perspective.

Ironic that the thing which destroyed quite a lot of trust in politicians is when he called Gillian Duffy a "bigoted woman". Never forget.

Doonhamer - following on from that, maybe the ONS ought to gather crony employment statistics as it has clearly been a government target for a long time.

Sam - that could finish them off. Too much baggage such as your quote, but he could be seen as a viable alternative to the other baggage.
