Thomas Sowell - Ever Wonder Why?

Thomas Sowell is a global treasure. We already know much of what he says but he says it in such an exceptionally lucid way. Much more difficult than it sounds in a public arena so heavily infected with misleading language.

He is right too – we should view our civilisation with much more approval than we have become accustomed to hear in the mainstream media. Considered approval certainly, but approval nonetheless.

We should teach it in schools in a sense where should is there to keep the show on the road because if we don’t it won’t stay on the road. We should teach that too. We should compare where we are today with well-known basket case countries and should not apologise for doing so.

Yes, excellent stuff. John Gray makes a similar point in this article.

(You may have recommended it here - I can't remember!)

And it's echoing Burke. We owe an enormous amount to earlier generations. For some reason we have trained the past couple of generations to be mindlessly hyper-critical regarding our own history and culture. Perhaps individualism just let an unstoppable genie out of the bottle. Once you start criticising something, you end up criticising everything.

It's usually the case now, that we just avoid the MSM in toto, and grab a few bits here and there when it suits.

With the awful BBC mouthing inanities, and Sky and ITV not far behind, we lead much more pleasant days without the glee of disruption portrayed as 'news', and 'change'.

This explanation you have posted is superb!

James - he is and who will take his place?

Sam - I read it but I don't think I linked to it in a post. As I recall I'd already done two recent posts on Dostoevsky's novel so I left it. Good article though. Yes we do owe an enormous amount to earlier generations but that awareness hasn't been kept alive if the media are any guide. Perhaps they are not though - lack of awareness may be partly an illusion created by the media.

Scrobs - we ignore the MSM too. I scan it for blog interest but that's it. Too misleading and miserable.
