Propaganda works

Something else I’ve been doing during this enforced inactivity is to scan readers’ comments on lockdown stories in the media, particularly local media. As so often, the comments are more interesting than the stories. Check the story headline and first paragraph then skip to the comments if any – that’s usually my approach.

An overwhelming impression is that lockdown propaganda has been extremely effective. Take any story about people who disregard lockdown rules and there will be lots of comments by narrow souls prepared to abuse anyone who steps out of line. Mavericks who conspicuously fail to comply are described as stupid, selfish, a danger to others and anything else likely to pass comment moderation. Not only that but draconian punishments are advocated – going far beyond anything officially sanctioned.

It has been obvious for some time that the pandemic poses hardly any significant risk to millions of healthy people who are also well below retirement age. But the propaganda still did its job.

There's a little magazine, hard copy and online, which serves our village of around 5000 people. You probably have something similar: adverts for local trades, amateur articles on country walks and recipes, and an article from the vicar.

It now contains, in the comments section, complaints about people walking on the common. No names mentioned (yet), but denunciations of these "thoughtless" "anti-social" people who are undermining our marvellous NHS.

There really are some people who would thrive in a police state. The veneer is remarkably thin.

The problem we see, is the conflict of statistics, especially espoused by the awful BBC, where nobody ever finishes up understanding what on earth is going on.

The papers aren't much better either, so we just take the temperature of the overall discussions, and decide ourselves.

I think it's what most normal people do...

Macheath - dig out the tar and feathers.

Sam - yes it's all very creepy. There is no mystery about recruiting agents of the totalitarian state.

Scrobs - "so we just take the temperature of the overall discussions, and decide ourselves."

I'm tending to do that because as you say, we just end up with conflicting statistics.
