Disfiguring Derby

The BBC has a remarkable claim that Derby could be disfigured by a monorail project.

A "futuristic" billion-pound monorail, inspired by one being built for Egypt's ancient pyramids, is being proposed to connect Derby to a possible HS2 hub.

City council leader Chris Poulter said the highway in the sky would run people from the city centre to the high-speed rail station in Toton, Nottinghamshire.

Mr Poulter said the scheme was "quite futuristic stuff" and was one of several alternatives being considered.

However, rail experts said a monorail could "disfigure Derby".

Surely more optimism is called for here. Making Derby even less visually attractive would be no easy task even for city planners.

Looking at that picture, I doubt if the resistance to HS2 will be quite as vigorous as in Chiltern commuter villages.

"Rail experts" would rather would rather have another Edinburgh. Teams running on track strong enough for main line trains and no space for other road traffic.
Monorail in Sydney were really nice, unobtrusive and because they don't have to mingle with pedestrians, cyclists, cars, buses, lorries, etc. can be fully automatic.
So far, no cyclists have been killed by monorail carriages.

Sam - as far as I can see HS2 has been welcomed although straight through the centre would be even more welcome.

Woodsy - that guy could sell HS2.

Doonhamer - Nottingham trams have been involved in deaths and accidents ever since they first ran but it isn't easy to find out how many.
