Maybe Sadiq will tackle Godzilla

A Godzilla El Niño is coming — and London is on the front line

Scientists at Imperial College are leading efforts to monitor the oceans and protect our city

The climate is already wetter. Research shows the extra rain now falling across the UK each winter as a result of fossil-fuel-driven global warming would fill three million Olympic swimming pools. London is particularly exposed, facing flood risk from three directions: North Sea storm surges pushing up the tidal Thames; swollen rivers and tributaries; and intense rainfall overwhelming the drainage of a densely built city.

Sadiq Khan could impose ULEZ across London - Ultra Low El Niño Zone.

If only the scientists had chosen to call the weather event a Goldilocks El Niño. So much of the 'approved' narrative arises from the words used to name it, rather than the actual science involved.

What utter tosh. If our climate was hotter and wetter as they claim, we would be a bloody rainforest.
Rain is weather.

Time to re-read ‘The Kraken Wakes’ with its account of London’s flood defences being outflanked at high tide; maybe Wyndham was onto something and it’s all down to xenobaths altering the sea temperatures in the Pacific.

DJ - that's an idea, calling it a Goldilocks El Niño would change the whole thing. It's unfortunate that there isn't much to be said about a Godzilla El Niño apart from making fun of it like that.

Mike - and we'd be growing things like bananas instead of importing them.

Macheath - I can't remember if I ever read the book, but it does raise a few thoughts about the role of apocalyptic science fiction in shaping an undercurrent of anxiety about science and technology. Not that anxieties are entirely irrational, but far from being as rational as we need them to be.

Scientists at Imperial College are ... lying, much as they did over covid.

dearieme - that's what struck me too, the rot seems to be deeper.

Naturally, the facts, as seen here https://notalotofpeopleknowthat.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/image-46.png are simply of no interest.

If it washes away Tower Hamlets, that would be a bonus.

Peter - yes it's weird, facts seem to be of no interest in their world, even facts which wreck their assertions.

Penseivat - I don't know Tower Hamlets except by reputation, but based on that, washing away would be a bonus.
