There is an old railway at Confolens [France] where one can hire 'bicycles' like these. The left wheel is to keep one on the rails. They are so heavy that one is kept upright. No cycling skill needed.

Doesn't go very fast does it. How long to travel across those vast plains before expiring with the effort?
