Always degenerating into repetition

Labour MP blames Starmer for ‘soul-destroying’ local election results

  • Rebecca Long-Bailey criticised Sir Keir Starmer, describing Labour's recent local election results as 'soul-destroying'.
  • Speaking to the BBC on Friday, the Salford MP stated that Labour had been 'squeezed' by both Reform and the Greens.
  • This squeeze resulted in the loss of several 'really good' councillors and candidates for the party.
  • Long-Bailey noted that many residents felt unable to vote for Labour due to the party's national actions.
  • She suggested Labour’s recent slogans, rhetoric, and decisions had not resonated well in local communities.

Man’s life consists in a connection with all things in the universe. Whoever can establish, or initiate a new connection between mankind and the circumambient universe is, in his own degree, a saviour. Because mankind is always exhausting its human possibilities, always degenerating into repetition, torpor, ennui, lifelessness. When ennui sets in, it is a sign that human vitality is waning, and the human connection with the universe is gone stale. Then he who comes to make a new revelation, a new connection, whether he be soldier, statesman, poet, philosopher, artist, he is a saviour.

D.H. Lawrence - Reflections on the death of a porcupine and other essays (1925)

Keir Starmer is entirely unable to offer that new revelation, or as Rebecca Long-Bailey puts it, a soul. His eventual replacement won’t be able to offer it either.

But we already know that.

I'd forgotten that Rebecca Long-Failey even existed.

Many people are concerned about who might take over from Stumbler. Quite understandable given the names of the potential candidates.

And yet... if someone else took over Labour and 'proved' their shortcomings then Labour might be out of power for all future general elections, not just a couple.

Sometimes electors need to play the long game - being distracted by smoke and mirrors only allows the incompetent or indolent politicians license to continue.

dearieme - sorry about that, she is best forgotten. Although if she gets involved in a leadership challenge we have the chance to refer to her as Rebecca Long-Failey every time her name pops up.

Mike - I agree, a leadership challenge isn't something to look forward to with that lot having their say.

DJ - the party could certainly mess things up to that degree and maybe there are some in the party who know it. As you say, if someone else 'proves' their shortcomings then political failure could become much more serious.

‘She suggested Labour’s recent slogans […] had not resonated well in local communities.’

Perhaps your readers could suggest some replacement slogans for the Party, for example, ‘Labour: it could be worse’ or ‘This too shall pass’.

Allison Pearson used to call her “Rebecca Wrong-daily”. Worth stealing imho.

Macheath - yes, it's a weird thing to say. I like your alternative slogans, although 'Labour: it could be worse' is rather grim. Accurate but grim. Oh dear.

Peter - it is worth stealing, let's hope she plays a leading role in whatever farce follows Starmer.
