Progressive driving licences

What are progressive driving licences and will the UK introduce them?

Ministers are expected to resist calls for a major overhaul of driving qualifications when they unveil their latest plans to improve road safety.

Campaigners have argued that replacing Britain's current driving test regime could prevent thousands of injuries and deaths on the nation’s roads every year.

The existing ‘one-and-done’ system means newly qualified drivers face the same rules of the road as other more experienced motorists as soon as they pass their test...

While a ‘graduated’ or ‘progressive’ driving licence could take several forms, it would likely see restrictions such as a top speed, number of passengers and the types of roads they can drive on.

These would be gradually lifted based on factors such as age, competence behind the wheel and driving experience.

Ministers may resist but campaigners won't stop campaigning. Meddling never ends and there is no indication that it ever will.

Downunder, they had a thing called a P plate ... for one year after becoming licenced.

My appeasement theory: if this change can be made in such a way that it benefits a certain demographic (say newly arrived illegal migrants working as delivery drivers) then it will be implemented.

James - they have it here too, although it isn't mandatory.

Anon - a few years I was chatting with a former lorry driver who said he had to give it up because he couldn't compete with migrant lorry drivers who would do two shifts but under different names.

Here in New Zealand they have a restricted licence for newly passed young drivers. this restricts the number of passengers carried and has a zero alc ohol limit. I have just renewed my licence for another two years as I have just had my 88th Birthday, on attaining 70 years we are checked every two years by our GP that we are fit and still able cope with handling a motor vehicle. I dont know if I am being hyper sensitive, but the TV seems to be showing a lot of old farts getting into cars and having spectacular crashes while onlookers suck their teeth and mutter about taking away licences.

John - a two yearly check sounds tedious but I bet you are right about the old driver propaganda on TV - it probably is propaganda.

I’d be in favour of restricting boys under 21 from carrying passengers. One reads so many tragic stories of teenage deaths.

Peter - that's a good idea. Yes there are so many tragic stories of teenage deaths.
