If David Starkey presents how we got to where we are (state control and authoritarianism) we now need to work out how we reverse the creeping hand of the State.
I have championed defunding the BBC as a comparatively easy first step. Then defund the Arts Councils, And then move on to other QUANGOs and NGOs. It took us a century to fall into control by the Blob, it will certainly take us decades to reverse.
But unless we try the reverse course we will be dragooned into a Fabian 'utopia'. Not so much 'one size fits all' but 'all must fit one size' - because the expert bureaucrats tell us so.
DJ - I agree, it will take decades to reverse. Systematic reversal would require a powerful political narrative, one capable of surviving changes in government and sustained negative propaganda.
It seems very unlikely without a major change of political mood, which poll results suggest might be happening to a limited extent, but the popularity of Greens is disturbing.
