Run for the exits

Horror fire sparks panic at COP30 as panicked attendees 'run for exits' in frenzied scenes

A huge fire erupting during COP30 in Brazil sparked scene of panic on Thursday. Delegates were seen running for the exits after the blaze broke out in the pavilion area of a venue where UN climate talks are taking place.

UN and security crews rushed to the area to try and put out the fire, as the building was being evacuated. Firefighters also rushed to the scene to quash the flames, with social media footage showing the fire rising from the venue and smoke engulfing one of the corridors. The efforts may be aided by rain starting to fall after the blaze erupted.

It sounds as if all the delegates evacuated. The things they do for us.

Blame it on Globall Warming.

I refer the honourable member to the answer Lucy Connolly gave earlier.

DAD - they will, bound to.

Tammly - although they seem to be making a big enough mess of it themselves.

Disappointing; I was hoping a small asteroid ( tiny one would do) might wipe out the lot of them.

djc - yes it is disappointing, but the obvious bungling is quite encouraging.

Did their eyes revolve in opposite directions?

(Apologies to Michael Wharton)

Peter - yes, although it caused some of them to try racing for two exits at the same time.

djc - ha ha, thanks I'll pass that one on :)

So will we ever be told the cause?

In a pavilion containing ‘trade displays of new technology’, presumably with batteries included, recent history and Occam’s razor suggest that a public report might turn out to be rather problematic.

Macheath - yes it could be problematic. From what I read of the COP30 organisation, it could easily have been any one of a number of more familiar causes such as faulty wiring, heaters, lighting and so on. If it was a battery though...

Ah Surkier, I suppose you have receipts for all your entertaining expense claims.
Oh, I see they were all consumed in the Great Fire.of COP.
What we call a COP out. Never mind. You are a man of honour. Just sign here.

Doonhamer - that's an interesting idea, a large bin full of slips of paper accidentally caught fire, causing the Great Fire of COP Receipts.
