Downing Street rejects Welsh leader’s call to ‘rethink’ winter fuel policy
Sir Keir Starmer has rejected calls for a U-turn over the decision to strip winter fuel payments from millions of pensioners after Labour suffered a backlash at the ballot box.
Welsh First Minister Baroness Eluned Morgan said the decision to means-test the previously universal benefit was “something that comes up time and again” as she called for a “rethink”.
Accused indirectly I should add, but a 'rethink' implies an initial 'think' which seems unlikely. Keir Starmer may be accused of many things, but in this case he is probably innocent.

He does not care about us. ( The guaranteed inflation will ensure that the means tested threshold will in reality sink like all other thresholds.)
And we do not care about him.
Now, if all us pensioners were to self identity as Ukrainians the dosh would rain down on us.
He really is a Slithy Tove.
Doonhamer - I agree, he doesn't care about us, and probably doesn't care about anyone else. There is something not right about the man, something which should have barred him from responsible positions.
Labour could have avoided most of their current problems had the cabinet been asked to just sit and think of the likely consequences of their decisions. Just sit quietly, maybe take a piece of paper and a pencil, and make two columns. First column is what the proposed policy would do in their area of responsibility; the second is general consequences. Then all briefly report back and have a natter while someone takes notes.
Winter fuel allowance, Keir? Looks far too risky. Saves hardly any money, and a couple of us reckon we won't be here next year if it goes ahead...
Sam - an interesting way of putting it because it brings home how absurdly incompetent they are. It's not easy to imagine them discussing the decisions around a flipchart while still failing to spot the consequences. From this aspect, it could be said that there is too much incompetence, it has to be malice.
Perhaps in a few years time after they have been thrown out neck and crop at the next election, they will sit and think "well , it seemed a good idea at the time".
John - and they will come up with ghost-written books which say what a sound, progressive idea it was but voters weren't progressive enough for it.
