Charmless

Conservatives call for Labour minister to resign after grooming gangs comment

The comment was made by Ms Powell, the leader of the House of Commons, after Conservative political commentator Tim Montgomerie started to ask a question on BBC Radio 4's Any Questions.

"I don't know if you saw the documentary on Channel 4 about rape gangs," he started, in relation to the recent programme Groomed: A National Scandal, which centred around five girls who were sexually abused by rape gangs.

Ms Powell, who is MP for Manchester Central, responded: "Oh, we want to blow that little trumpet now, do we? Yeah, OK, let's get that dog whistle out."

There are many other words, but "charmless" seems to apply too frequently whenever we encounter members of Keir Starmer's Cabinet in the media.

As for "thick and charmless" - that's not good is it?

Just when you thought that a little reflection after that very obvious message in the elections might be in order, you get this.

Can politicians get anymore stupid?

But it is more profound than mere 'charmless'. I suspect it is a nasty case of auris stanneaitis - 'tin ear' - or an insensitivity to the nuances of current situation or subtleties of a craft; indifference to somebody else's attitudes and moods.

And, what is worse the whole Cabinet suffers from it. They have all achieved their position by sticking to their courses of action and not listening to how that course of action is received outside politics. It explains a great deal - from the abrupt withdrawal of the Winter Fuel Allowance, VAT on private schooling, surrender of the Chagos islands, inheritance taxes for farmers, all done seemingly dismissive of any criticism. And the daddy of all tin-eared determination, Net Zero.

You will ask about Two Tier. He seems to flip flop between positions, yet actually The Plan continues unchanged. I guess he is more careful about hiding his tin ear.

Socialists/Marxists don't need to be charming, their dogma steers their twisted ideals and they care little about issues other than their entitlement to administer and control. Labour are consistent in never getting to root of the problems faced by so many British Citizens. She'll never resign, despite being shown up as an absolute fool!

Rishi tried hard - too hard - to be charming. Boris had a kind of bumbling niche charm which he heavily relied upon. Even David Cameron attempted it in a sort of stiff Old Etonian way. Theresa May and that funny little Truss woman had none of it. But Labour are the charmless government. There isn't one I can think of who attempts to make themselves agreeable, and who isn't wooden and affronted when challenged.

I'm beginning to miss Rishi. For all his faults he was an agreeable and intelligent young man.

I can see a ‘minister’s cat’ party game developing out of this; I’m going with: ‘thick, charmless and crass….’

Has Sir Drear Charmless given her his full backing yet?

Anon - it's weird because as you say, he just received a very obvious message from voters. He's a hopeless case, needs to be gone.

DJ - I'm sure you are right, it's an aspect of stupidity, the inability to grasp criticism as a genuine alterative aspect of reality, social, political and physical. As if Two Tier selected models of himself, people who also don't hear what he doesn't hear - hard-line ideologues.

Scrobs - yes, she'll never grasp what she chooses not to grasp or see issues her dimwit ideology hides from her narrow vision.

Sam - yes, they are disturbingly charmless and things seem likely to become worse unless Starmer is replaced by someone who does at least grasp the idea of nurturing some level of popularity.

dearieme - I agree, Rishi wasn't this bad and seemed capable of some level of political honesty as opposed to the automatic lying we have now.

Macheath - that's a good idea, it should generate lots of imaginative entertainment - and set a few more rumours going!

dearieme - I hope he's given her his full backing, we'll know that if she starts to clear out her office.
