Government demands 'immediate, mandatory' housing plans from councils to build 1.5m homes
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said: "Our Plan for Change will put builders not blockers first, overhaul the broken planning system and put roofs over the heads of working families and drive the growth that will put more money in people's pockets.
"We're taking immediate action to make the dream of homeownership a reality through delivering 1.5 million homes by the next parliament and rebuilding Britain to deliver for working people."
I know nothing about building houses, but I wouldn't buy a house built from 2025 onwards. Some of them may be okay, but 'just shove them up anywhere' doesn't appeal to me as an underlying mantra.

It's interesting that Labour have adopted a 'tear up the planning process' stance since they love bureaucrats. On the other hand Labour appear to hate the rich NIMBYs who benefit from the planning processes. I wonder if 'hate' is more potent than process?
It will be interesting to see how the Labour Government gets on.
" 'just shove them up anywhere' doesn't appeal to me as an underlying mantra." It already is. Have you visited a recent new-build? "Three bedrooms" means one bedroom and two walk-in cupboards, build and fittings quality is as low as is achievable and good luck with getting insurance on your piece of the floodplain . . .
There's a building site near us where the builders discovered that they'd mucked up the foundations for 90 houses and had to demolish them. Pity the poor families who had bought them and moved in!
I keep getting flashbacks to Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged, in which she portrayed exactly this sort of disconnect that Socialists have - demanding physical reality bend itself to their commands, while simultaneously enacting laws that will have precisely the opposite effect. And when failure inevitably happens, the fault is of course laid at the feet of those they despise..........the rich, businesses, 'wreckers' of all types......
It's funny that when the electorate demanded "immediate, mandatory" cessation of mass immigration, nothing happened.
They're not for you mate, you didn't come here in a boat
DJ - I suspect the planning process will be harder to tear up than they suppose, especially if newts, frogs, sensitive habitats, rare orchids and ancient hedgerows turn out to be more common than they knew.
Jannie - yes, I've watched a few videos about the inspection of new builds and they weren't encouraging. Walls not vertical, gaps around windows, doors which don't close, a whole host of problems.
dearieme - lessons learned all over the place I imagine. I wonder what the building inspectors were doing?
Sobers - yes it's very disconcerting to know we should all have learned about these disconnects decades ago, but still charlatans spin the same illusions about bending reality.
Sam - it is odd isn't it? Almost as there is a two tier democracy where one tier counts and one doesn't.
Bucko - good point, different standards may apply.
