'Tis the season of tinsel and baubles and wondering why

New Year Honours: Gareth Southgate, Stephen Fry, Sadiq Khan and Keely Hodgkinson make this year's list

More than 1,200 people have been awarded honours in this year's list - including a host of Team GB athletes and people who campaigned on behalf of wrongfully convicted sub-postmasters.

Former England manager Gareth Southgate, London mayor Sadiq Khan and actor Stephen Fry have been knighted in the New Year Honours.

The answer to the 2024 end of year quiz is:

Southgate used to play midfield.
Hodgkinson is a middle distance runner
Fry is a midwit pretending to be intelligent
Khan turned London into a midden.

Not that its very likely, but were I ever offered a gong or titled award of some kind I think I would refuse, on the grounds that to be associated with many of the people who get these awards is an insult.

Why Stephen Fry? For exceptional enunciation of the word "moist"? What does he know. Nudge, nudge.
Hugh Laurie and Rowan Atkinson obviously move in the wrong circles.

Who are these people?

You only have to look down the list to see what a waste of paper this is. It didn't occur to me, but my son exploded "Sadiq Khan a knight of the realm? He's not even a 4king Christian!"

Sam - 4 out of 4 must be worth a knighthood. I didn't know no.2 although I knew she was/is a track athlete of some kind.

Sobers - I'd turn it down too, it is an insult. I wonder how many do turn it down?

Doonhamer - and Rowan Atkinson has spoken up against the erosion of free speech so not even close to the right circles.

djc - celebrities really, including Khan, but now they are also lifelong members of the Establishment.

Jannie - that's a good response, worth a knighthood I'd say.

I used to know a chap who I thought must be a shoo-in for a knighthood. I said as much to a third party who said "Oh no, he once turned down a position on a public enquiry because he thought he'd done more than his share already and had other matters to attend to". "Do you mean they'd react like spoiled brats to just one refusal?" "Yes".

dearieme - that sounds strict, maybe it's like selling your soul because Starmer seems to be one short. I'm surprised he got a knighthood for it though.

I did hear that Gerry Adams was turned down for a Nobel Peace Prize because he hadn't killed enough people.

Penseivat - and it's trivial compared to the number of pensioners expected to expire thanks to the winter fuel debacle.
