But not necessarily sensible

UK police officers have been told to take a "consistent" approach when ensuring people comply with emergency measures aimed at curbing coronavirus.

Grant Shapps says they are being sensible but that's political-speak and not the primary aim. Consistent is the primary aim - it always is with bureaucracies.

But Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said police forces were doing a difficult job and being sensible about enforcing social distancing measures.

What Shapps did not do was to express support for Derbyshire Police. Neither did he express criticism of them - despite the interviewer's many attempts to put words into his mouth.

decnine - maybe he thought the lack of explicit support was enough. Maybe it was.

The "drive to walk" issue has now hit Sussex. Police are stopping cars on the A272, and a clergyman from the Cathedral was shouted at when walking a few miles from his house. He was recognised by a local!

My guess is that the "regulations" will soon be relaxed, but it will be much more interesting if it goes the other way and the police are asked to get tougher. After decades of being ignored by the police and being unprotected, will middle-class people still comply?

Sam - will middle-class people still comply? I don't know but I can imagine them becoming very edgy as the year advances, especially if we see some fine weather.
