England's worst motorway

England's worst motorway revealed as 193-miles road used by thousands every day tops the list

England's worst motorway has been revealed in a new survey which also finds that overall driver satisfaction has declined over the last year.

The M1 is officially the country's least-favourite motorway, with just 57 per cent of drivers satisfied with their journey on the road.

Perhaps the M1 was an early example of turbocharging.

Glad I don’t drive anymore. Is the A1 any better now? Does it still exist?

James - I haven't used the A1 in recent years, but never liked it.

The M1 isn't much worse than any other but the standards of driving are the cause of most problems. Lane sitters at 50mph in lane 2 or 3 because they don't want the stigma of the "slow lane"; diving for an exit at the last second no matter how many slower vehicles you have to carve up; failing to give way to joining traffic and/or forcing their way into solid traffic; etc etc. All these can be nailed by traffic cars but don't register on speed cameras: there's no income stream so the "authorities" aren't interested and there's a fat chance of us getting the extra manned vehicles we need..

Jannie - the worst driving we see is on our local stretch of the A38 with drivers driving at lunatic speeds, presumably because there are no cameras. When towing a caravan, I acquired the habit of driving on the inside lane at lorry speed for an easy journey.

The M1 is like the curate's egg. Good in parts. The Northern section is acceptable but the further South you go the more crowded it gets and the surroundings get more commercial and grimmer.

I would like to see reasons.
If this was a survey of people who use all motorways it would mean something. Truckers. Do commercial travellers still exixt? Long time since I used English motorways regularlly.
If I complete the journey without pothole damage, diverted by wrong, ambiguous or broken signs (I hate the word "signage" along with all the rest ending in "age" I hope that they die the death of all other jargon, going forward)I am satisfied.

DJ - we are quite close to the M1 but apart from short stretches haven't used it for a number of years. Haven't been south on the M1 for ages, but don't remember it with affection.

Doonhamer - I don't know what the reasons would be, mine would be how busy it is and roadworks. Mrs H and I often comment on words such as 'signage' and similar wordage.
