Theresa May is a fool

Greenhouse gas emissions in the UK will be cut to almost zero by 2050, under the terms of a new government plan to tackle climate change.

Prime Minister Theresa May said reducing pollution would also benefit public health and cut NHS costs.

Britain is the first major nation to propose this target - and it has been widely praised by green groups.

But some say the phase-out is too late to protect the climate, and others fear that the task is impossible.

Maybe Mrs May hopes this will go some way to boost her reputation when the history books are written. If so she's a fool.

It's beyond ridiculous, isn't it? Anyone with days left in office could make any grand gesture they liked. People would only see it as positive if it was a good idea in the first place, and if the proposer had worked hard to get it implemented. I've little idea of the science and economics involved, but my guess is that it is a thoroughly bad idea. What makes it truly putrid is that she is leaving all the work to others.

I note she wants to involve young people on some kind of advisory panel. This is the cherry on the cake. Why not involve bonobos and dolphins as well?

When that nice Mr Blair stepped down, he magically became a Peace Envoy to the middle East. Imagine that Mrs May is hoping to become the UN Climate Envoy, on a suitable stipend, of course

Sam - one technical aspect is really simple - even if the climate claims are sound what difference can the UK make? Yes it is a thoroughly bad idea and many people could tell her so if only she had a nose for the difference between good advice and bad.

Graeme - yes she is bound to be offered something futile but well paid.
