We had one of those Cortina cars. Quite nice in its way but I was lucky enough to have a garage whose engineer had a sense of humour. The only time I took it to France it broke down in the middle of Brittany and had to be towed to St. Malo to catch the boat home.

Cars built for export, designed for the British and beyond, ruined by red robbo.

Such reliable engineering and understated style are typically British, of course. But only by joining the common Market were we able to really capitalise on our skills, and for the British motor industry to become the world beating giant that, er, it...is...today.

Demetrius - not many around now although I saw one not so long ago. In very good condition too, but it must be quite a job keeping it like that.

Scrobs - plus political clout via the Labour party.

Sam - I suppose in a way we reaped the benefit of our skills.
