Happy New Year

That I was born a man is an accident. I might almost say a pity, for it's very nearly a crime to be a man now-a-days, but it isn't my fault. The devil take him who has stirred up the two halves of humanity, one against the other! He has much to answer for.

August Strindberg - Getting Married (1884)

Maybe this suggests a mantra for 2019 - very little is really new.

Happy New Year to all those who happen to find their way here and linger, if only for a while.

Does one linger longer or longer linger? Anyhow try the Youtube Pathe News for 1949 which tells its tale. It is Brit' and not much else. Mao Tse Tung is not mentioned.

And to you Mr Haart.
Let's hope we can all continue to keep our shiny sides up and our barnacle sides down during the course of 2019.

Thank you for a great year's posting Mr H!

More fun and games next year when we shed the bloated Brussels crowd and move ahead!

Sackers - I rather not trans anywhere.

Demetrius - I suppose Mao was too far away in those days.

Mac - I hope so but the feel of a sinking ship is strong these days.

Scrobs - more fun and games indeed. Almost feels deliberate, to distract us from the real world.

That sinking feeling. There is a very jolly song for such occasions which begins
“I tell the tale of the Nancy Lee
A ship, that got shipwrecked at sea...”
....and concludes
“ The bravest man was Captain Brown,
Who played his ukulele as the ship, went down”
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Edward - maybe we need another verse to the effect that Captain Brown chucked all the gold overboard but still the ship sank. Or maybe that's too gloomy a way to begin the year.

I found one performance by Ambrose and his Orchestra at the Dorchester Hotel

I hope I got that right!

There was one verse where the Captain's wife could not be restrained from chattering
"So we tied her to the anchor as the ship went down" but I did not listen all the way through this version.
