Toast

A single anecdote, but another interesting hint that the digital upheaval may have some way to go.

Hmm... follow the chain of thought to its conclusion. Many people already use Google to do background research before engaging a 'professional'. What if you go to your doctor with a diagnosis and and recommended prescription? What if you go to your solicitor with a tick list of activities for your house conveyancing? What if you bypass your MP to find a way through some dispute with a service provider?

Perhaps 'professionals' will be seen as not so necessary any more, but rather 'gatekeepers' who ration access to the service you need. Not a good look - and not worthy of any particular respect.

DJ - I agree, 'gatekeeper' is not a good look and the look isn't likely to improve as it becomes more obvious that gatekeepers is what many of them are.

Doctors could always try to raise their game. You know, become numerate, for instance.

"What if you bypass your MP"

When AI allows me to bypass government entirely I'll be happy!

Dave - it may be going that way, or at least back to basics. Some would pull the house down first though.

dearieme - and read a few of the papers which cast authoritative doubt on what they do.
