Sky packages

Why can't I buy satellite TV such as Sky with a package which excludes the BBC so I don't have to pay the licence fee?

For the same reason no TV company issues a 'Pay as you go' card.

Roger - yet if Sky wanted to compete with the BBC it would probably raise the idea.

I dunno, just wondering, but possibly it's because the legal requirement to buy a licence hinges on having equipment that can receive a television broadcast (any one), rather than actually using it for any partiular purpose?

WY - some say the legal requirement is just watching the programmes as they are broadcast, but I don't know if this is a legally sound view.
