Being a London MP could 'count against' Thornberry in deputy leadership race, says Baroness Harman
Dame Emily, who has been the MP for Islington South and Finsbury since 2005, confirmed she will stand for the deputy leadership in a social media post on Tuesday.
The chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee vowed to be "a voice for the membership, unions, PLP, and our constituents - not just nod along" if she is elected deputy Labour leader on 25 October.
Hmm - a chap might assume that having the grace, charm and appeal of a serial nosebleed ought to count against Dame Emily, but this is Labour, so no degree of ghastliness is entirely off the table.
The order of her "voice for..." is interesting too -

Damemily has always seemed an unpleasant piece of work to me. But look at the other competitors! One claimed that the fuss about the rape gangs was just a "dog-whistle". We must assume that her daughter was somehow safe.
Another is that Phillipson hag.
Starmer must be getting a little bit concerned about the complete lack of talent in this awful government, Dame Flag-Scorn will fit that bill easily...
James - I wish the wreck would speed up so we get to see how it is dealt with afterwards.
dearieme - yes, a ghastly coven of competitors. Surely there are a few responsible people in the party who see how poor it is.
Scrobs - yes it's dire, so bad it's mildly entertaining to see what depths they can plumb as we go down the gurgler.
That list of priorities is revealing and possibly common to all of them, possibly with the added vested interest of DEI for some. (It’s bad luck for Lammy that Harriet Harman is stridently demanding a female deputy, although he can rest assured in the knowledge that he too can have a cervix with a bit of medical intervention.)
I’m reminded of my mother’s MP who, when approached by one of her friends over a planned (and much-needed) reservoir which was then under discussion in the Lords, told her to go to the council instead; he was in his surgery ‘to represent my party in the constituency, not get involved in local matters’.
Emily Thornberry is infamous for her comments about white van man and the display of flags. The current Operation Raise the Colours is a pointed rejoinder and means that many more people will think her a snob, or worse. But will enough Labour MPs and members secretly agree with her...
Macheath - an interesting admission by your mother’s MP and presumably an accurate comment on party control even if he wasn't supposed to say so.
In general, MPs do seem to be weirdly limited people, but maybe that's party politics, it attracts weird people with a penchant for the feckless imposition of ideology on other people.
DJ - apparently she isn't gathering much support so far, so maybe quite a few Labour MPs and members think she's a snob too. Or it's an image they don't want and they don't think she can lose it.
Completely off topic, but on the subject of priorities, I just wanted to share this gem from our local news in France. While the cities are busy rioting, things are a little more laid-back in the provinces; the local protest rally started an hour later than planned, at which point the following press release was issued:
‘Changement de programme. Il n'y aura pas de sit-in et pique-nique devant la mairie. En raison des travaux devant la cité administrative, les "Bloquons tout" ont décidé, finalement, de pique-niquer dans le jardin de Central Parc.’
“Never mind the protesting, comrades; where are we going to have lunch?”
(‘Change of plan: the sit-in and picnic in front of the Town Hall will not be going ahead. Because of the roadworks outside the municipal offices, the protesters have finally decided to picnic in the park.’)
What happened to Lady Nugee? Did Sir Chris get the heave ho when he ceased being useful?
Macheath - ha ha, that's how things should be. Protest rally after lunch if the weather holds out, and we have volunteers to tidy away the picnic debris afterwards. Does anyone have something suitable for cooling the wine?
Doonhamer - I think they are still together, but Emily may have decided that politically she isn't a Lady.
