When Movies Get Science Wrong

Many years ago I saw a film featuring a futuristic submarine travelling under the Arctic ice. The Van Allen belt was in fire and melting the ice and there was a dramatic scene of the submarine dodging huge chunks of ice "falling" through the water to the bottom of the sea. Some year ago I even found the name iof the film but I have forgotten it again. I would hope the people who made the film and approved the scene are embarrassed, but probably not.

Yeah. I always had my doubts about Wile E Coyote.

Anon - I had to look that one up – it was Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1961). The flaky science is criticised by a number of reviewers but I particularly like this comment –

“The Van Allen belt catching fire is as likely as the force of gravity going rusty.”

Doonhamer - the rocket-powered roller skates were convincing though.
