Boys and fire

source

Yesterday I introduced Grandson to the manly satisfactions of building a fire in the garden. It was only a small affair with kindling and a few sticks contained by bricks, but we were able to make toast and he soon learned how a waft of smoke leads to watering eyes.

He loved it and later in the day had a go at barbecuing sausages over charcoal. I enjoyed it too, so what is it with boys and fire?

I don't know what it is, but unless you keep quiet about it, the BBC will run a series about famous female bonfire-curators, and The Guardian will provide some convincing scientific links between fire, rape, and war.

Small boys and fire, all I know is my younger brother in those far of days could not be trusted with a box of matches, left to his natural desires he would have achieved a first class degree in arson.

It never affected me; I was not even "fired" by ambition.

Sam - the Beeb may even uncover a female arsonist or two and raise them to previously unsuspected levels of historical significance.

Wiggia - my cousin was like that and once burned himself quite badly. That cured him.

Henry - I was never fired by ambition either. Couldn't see the point of it.
