So J Sainsbury has decided to drop its tedious brand match promotion where shoppers receive time limited vouchers for as little as 1p if the branded goods they buy are more expensive than Asda.
Sainsbury’s is ditching its Brand Match promotion later this month as it prepares to cut more prices on everyday products.
The supermarket is understood to be planning to end the scheme, which it introduced in 2011, because changing shopping habits mean it now applies to less than a fifth of transactions.
It is switching investment to cutting prices on basics such as bread, cheese and household cleaning products rather than the Brand Match scheme, which gives shoppers money-off vouchers if they could have bought branded goods cheaper at Asda.
This story reminds me of a recent Sainsbury's shopping trip. A chap in front of us at the checkout was asked if he had a Nectar card. "No," he said firmly, "life's too short." He was right.

Our nectar account probably has enough points on it to buy a week's groceries, so you can imagine how gratified I feel. It was hard work getting there, though, what with all that driving out of my way so I could get petrol from BP, and taking advantage of all the Sainsbury's special points offers.
I think it took about four years.
They deserve a KISS, Keep It Simple Stoopid.
The 'have you got a - fill in as appropriate - card' is coming back with a vengeance as all and everyone seems to be setting up similar points schemes.
M&S where most people have shopped using a M&S card for years and get points, now are badgered into an additional "Sparks" card to do the same thing, so now you have two cards for one store.
My local garden centre now has a loyalty card, perhaps I should use the points garnered to purchase a dedicated wheelbarrow for all the extra cards being issued, or better still simply refuse to get involved.
Sainsbury would be better served by giving their shops the makeover they've needed for years. As with Morrisons, I don't shop there because they're dull, ugly and claustrophobic.
I hate shopping.
Sam - that may entitle you to some No-Spend SuperPoints for people who don't use their Nectar points.
Roger - Sainsbury's may have nowhere to go if they make it too simple. A bit expensive but convenient like the Co-op.
Wiggia - we have no store cards, can't be bothered with them. Just a Tesco credit card to collect a few points automatically.
DCB - you are right, they do need a makeover. Tired and uninspiring.
Demetrius - I'm not a fan either but these things have to be done.
That bloke without a nectar card was me!
David - I thought I recognised you.
