From wooden bats to...

I played my first game of table tennis with a school friend on his parents' dining room table. We had wooden bats and a row of books as our net. It was good fun and in time we graduated to a proper table, proper bats and took it a little more seriously. Not as seriously as these guys though.

I liked table tennis as a teenage. You stayed dry, nobody thumped you, the kit was cheap and you did not need special gear, you could play any time and "against" young ladies and nobody worried too much. Above all you did not need to join a club with fancy ideas.

Do you remember those 'miniature' tables, about 3' x 4', where the top was soft, and you were supposed to be able to play with the same strength and energy, but in your own small front room?

No, I didn't ever see one in action either...

Demetrius - I enjoyed it as a teenager too but I was never good enough to impress young ladies.

Scrobs - I don't remember them but they would have been far to small for my forehand topspin power drive. Even a standard table was far too short for that, or so I told myself as it whistled past my opponent's ear.
