Crap idea

source

From the Telegraph comes news of technological insanity.

LG has wowed the crowds at this year's CES with the self-opening fridge, which senses when a human moves past it and cracks open its door.

The door cracks opens automatically when a human puts their foot in front of its low embedded sensor, meaning it can't be opened by opportunistic passing pets. However, you still need to fully open the door yourself.

I'm no technophobe but the search for novelty doesn't always take us anywhere worthwhile. Maybe the fridge is journalist bait, a product to write about rather than anything more practical.

Or maybe not. Somebody will probably buy the thing. Midnight snackers for example.

I think it's a fantastic idea. Our fridge is often crammed with badly-placed food, and the door pops open. Every time I go past, I give it a little shove to make sure it is properly closed. This brilliant invention will mean that I'm never wasting my time.

Shouldn't it gives a dreadful Gothic-castle creak as it does so?

Does it detect the human's BMI and open a little wider?

As you say, an insane idea.

Given the publicity about the obesity crisis would'nt they have been better to make one that refuses to reopen until after a certain timed interval?

Sam - you may need the dieters' version which slams shut if a human approaches.

Sackers - good idea. A hideous laugh would add to the effect.

Roger and Woodsy - it could have BMI threshold beyond which it acts like a bank vault and can't be opened until the following morning.

What about a fridge that cries, "No no unhand me Sir" if it thinks you do not need to eat?

Demetrius - I'm sure it would be sterner. Image of a wagging finger on the door and a loud comment such as "stuffing ourselves again are we?"
