Parallel Parking

Why is it called parallel parking - the parking takes place in a line? Side by side parking is 'parallel'.

Woodsy - I suppose it refers to the method of parking where you begin by being parallel to an already parked car.

Not relevant in this case, which is about the danger of giant hams falling on you.
