Fuel For Stories

Queues grow at London petrol stations amid fears of price rise linked to Middle East war: Reports of forecourts running dry

Petrol stations appear to be running out of fuel as Brits scramble to fill up their vehicles before oil prices surge to 'record levels'.

The conflict in the Middle East has affected the transport of fuel to the West after companies suspended sailing through the Strait of Hormuz following Iranian attacks on ships and ports.

Not here, I topped up this morning and soon we'll burn some off on a trip to Matlock.

I just hope the present difficulties with Iran are not linked to a shortage of toilet paper. Shh!

DJ - oh no - some journalists will come up with that one.

Last time there was a shortage, the plumbers builders working on our house had to cancel as they wanted to conserve their (very) limited fuel for emergencies.

The local news the previous evening had a prominent feature from a petrol station warning of possible future shortages and queues; within hours, all the petrol stations in the surrounding area had been drained dry by opportunistic private motorists, leaving many local businesses stranded and out of pocket.

Presumably the journalists responsible were merrily congratulating themselves on having got ahead of the story in much the same way as Robert Peston was so clearly gratified with the excitement of reporting the catastrophic run on Northern Rock even though it was due, in no small part, to the airtime the BBC allocated to his coverage of a small queue outside one branch.

I spotted a few 'news' stories while flipping through Facebook last night, all about the huge petrol shortages to come. Filled the tank on the way to work and there was one other car there.
I think the 'news' wants to create a panic they can report on, when it probably wouldn't happen if they just shut their gobs

Macheath - and it would be no surprise if loads of journalists somehow managed to top up their vehicles before the stories came out. I bet electric car owners are sniggering though.

Bucko - I had to fill up this morning anyway because we were going out, but it was no problem even at Sainsbury's which is always busy. While we were out we passed a large filling station with only one car filling up.

I should be good now until the end of the month. Maybe the hysteria will have blown over by then. Or maybe it won't happen at all

Bucko - Ed Miliband will be hoping for a more lasting shortage of course.

Of course. All the net zero zealots will spin this so that it 'proves' their point
