Hoover Constellation

Mrs H remembers these because her parents had one. We didn't, we had a boring upright.

Maaany years ago I noted that the Hoover 652, the best upright of the day, could be thrown down the stairs and then used to vacuum the carpet at the bottom. Today's plastic fantastics can't make the same claim.

My grandparents had one, grndfather liked a few gadgets,I remember him hoovering Sunday mornings.
As to the Constellation: trouble is hovercraft are not very efficient, maintaining a cushion of air takes a lot of energy, reduces the airflow, and therefore the suction.

Jannie - I've just checked, apparently there are still some working examples of the Hoover 652.

djc - and presumably if it floated over dusty areas of carpet while being pulled around, it would blow the dust all over the place.

I can remember that my mother had a twin tub washing machine: I think it was a Hoover. Lousy design, really: Mum, who was small and partly crippled, had to lift the heavy, soaking laundry from the washing tub into the spin-dryer tub.

We had an upright, yes, plus a Singer sewing machine ... but I myself had one of these spherical things, pre-Henrys.

dearieme - my mother had a single tub washing machine with attached mangle, so the a corner of the wet washing only had to be lifted as high as the mangle. I think mangling was quite hard work though.

James - I like our Henry, it's good for all kinds of rough jobs such as cleaning up the wood burner.
