Oh well – September is often pleasant and lots of birthdays seem to pop up in September. It’s a good month for walking too. Better than August.

Yes, it is the oddest of months. I never seem to notice it start because, as you say, it is usually high summer. But the end is often a sudden break, and always seems mournful. It might be because, working in education, it meant I had to prepare for the slog every year. But even this feeling was based on earlier childhood experiences of returning to school every year.
September is the month of party conferences and spiders coming into the house. Both unpleasant. And yes, birthdays. Is there a minor demographic bulge caused by New Year drunken conceptions, I wonder...
I used to enjoy August, because Neil Diamond brought out an album called 'Hot August Night', so it always reminded me that we could still have some nice weather around then...
We had the heater on for the first time yesterday, as Senora O'Blene complained about how cold it was!
But September is the start of hop picking, which was my life as a young lad. Hops are the flavour of beer. Beer is the flavour of life. September is - er - the ninth month in the year (That's enough piddling about Scrobs - Ed).
Sam - yes there is something mournful about it. As you say some of it may be memories of going back to school because the mournful aspect does disappear.
Scrobs - our gas fire is on now. Decades ago I recall buying a jug of Adnams beer while camping in Suffolk and when we held it up to the light we could see hop fragments floating around.
