You could always give it another axis. For example, location. Most stories are either about leaving home to face challenges, and then returning enriched or settling elsewhere; or about a stranger who arrives in town.
Sam - yes - Lord of the Rings for example. As we know there are only a few story types likely to grab our attention so possibly a small number of axes would work.
