Nine Ladies

During our walk yesterday we passed the Nine Ladies on Stanton Moor.

A small early Bronze Age stone circle traditionally believed to depict nine ladies turned to stone as a penalty for dancing on Sunday. It is part of a complex of prehistoric circles and standing stones on Stanton Moor.

This was the first time for many years that I've been able to photograph the stones. Usually there is someone sitting on one of them or kids playing around them. Yesterday the place was deserted. One advantage of winter walking I suppose.

I bet if you pointed the camera at the kids, their parents would bundle them into the cars and drive off, leaving you with the perfect atmospheric shot.

Sexist! They should be called the Nine Anthropomorphised Figures of Indeterminate Gender. Trips right off the tongue!

It was a bronze age shopping mall which went bust in the iron age.

Sam - good idea but I don't think I'll try it. Another sign of the times.

DCB - careful, someone from English Heritage might pick up that idea.

Demetrius - probably out of town before out of town became fashionable.
