NHS to ban winter

The NHS has been told to ban winter outside hospitals, due to the huge number of deaths caused each winter by global warming.

Last winter 30, 000 more people died in England and Wales than would have been expected—an increase of 29% on the previous winter’s excess death toll—reveal figures published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

One of the UK’s largest unions has branded the figures “a national disgrace”

I think I have the story right. It's so hard to tell with statistics isn't it?

Excellent comment, Mr Haart!

Two points - one is that Mr Prentis presumably has his phone off the hook, and avoids all the irritating calls from insulation companies who also want to create work, and two, that he has decided that patients have to be ill during the week, because there ain't that many doctors to be found at weekends.

I now wear so many pullovers and jerseys, that I'm losing weight fast, and hope to at least meet bicycle tyre size, instead of tractor size, by Crimblemas!

Scrobs - I'm into personal insulation too. Merino wool vests are good and you don't get the Michelin Man effect.

But we have an ageing population. Moreover among that group we now have a higher proportion of people whose life styles may well impact on expectation. Relative prosperity could now be reducing expectation because of eating and drinking habits, sedentary occupations, etc. etc. Also, if the NHS capability is declining this will impact at the margins. It could all be a lot lot more complicated.

Demetrius - I think it already is too complicated and delicately balanced for politicians.

James - maybe we are due for a mild winter. I hope so.
