Davey demands 'new Magna Carta' to protect Britain from Trump

Sir Ed Davey has called for Britain to adopt a new written constitution, arguing it is essential to make the nation "resistant to authoritarian creeps like Donald Trump".

Speaking at the Liberal Democrat spring conference, the party leader advocated for a "new Magna Carta" to safeguard the UK's fundamental commitments to human rights, the NHS, and freedom of expression from potential erosion.

Does Magna Carta mean nothing to you? Did she die in vain?

A new Magna Carta to safeguard the NHS?

    Words literally fail me.

    Well, polite ones do anyway.

  4. Trump has proved so very useful in Britain: every hopeless sixth-form level keyboard warrior has to take a shot at him so they're leaving our own toerags alone to do what they do best - IE 4Call . . .

  5. How about:

... make the nation resistant to authoritarian creeps like Keir "Think before you Post" Starmer ...

No, can't see that making it in there.

  6. We should be so lucky to be 'safeguarded' by the likes of Ed Davey and Kier Starmer.

  7. James - I'd add the people who vote for them, they need to get a grip.

dearieme - yes he should, he's contemptible.

Peter - yes, his gibberish is a kind of armour against criticism, it doesn't make enough sense to disentangle.

Jannie - and the toerags seem to know how much is now under the media radar. They probably tell their media pals to keep it going.

Barbarus - yes it's almost baffling, we are governed by one of the most authoritarian creeps in the developed world and Davey points a finger across the Atlantic. He seems to know he's preaching to idiots.

  8. Tammly - yes it's such a comfort.

  9. I understand that the Magna Carta was an agreement between Barons and the King (I simplify).

A modern Magna Carter would have to be between the Electors and the Elected. I can't see any politician committing to such an agreement unless there were plenty of loopholes and exceptions - which would invalidate the agreement.

  10. DJ - that's it, won't happen. A few years ago it would have been 800 pages long with numerous references and caveats and nobody would understand it.

Today there is the added danger that AI would summarise it and point out the inconsistencies and loopholes in a way which anyone could read and understand. Makes it even less likely.

  11. I have long said that Davey's main talent, apart from doing nothing to prevent innocent people being prosecuted, is to fall in the water for photo opportunities. The problem is, he keeps coming up for air!

  12. Penseivat - I wonder if he could be convinced that a life-jacket filled with sand would be more environmentally friendly?
