Going for a drive

  1. If I was that first guy who had a flight to catch, I'd want to have a little think about the autopilot before boarding.

  2. Sam - so would I, and check if they have to switch the plane off then back on again if it gets an upgrade while in the air.

Some time ago I had a bet with a friend that genuinely self-driving cars wouldn’t exist in our lifetimes. So far it’s looking good.

  4. You can't just switch the engine off!?

  5. Peter - some videos of Tesla self-driving are impressive, but they are usually on main roads and the driver always has to be ready to touch the steering wheel. A pity I reckon, because driving has become fairly tedious.

Anon - I wonder about that whenever these runaway stories crop up. Surely there is a kill switch of some kind which bypasses the self-driving software.

  6. [this default to anon is a bit irritating, anyway…. ]
Every machine-shop has, or should have, a big red stop switch somewhere easy to reach. Buses, rally cars etc have emergency cut off switches, why not self-driving cars?
[ps "failed to publish, please try again later" why Blogger, why?]

  7. djc - I don't know why Blogger fails to publish sometimes. It occasionally happens to me and once or twice it flagged my comment as spam.
