Wes Streeting On Manoeuvres

  1. I argued some years ago that Starmer was put in charge after Corbyn to make Labour electable again. He was a nightwatchman to hold the Party until a new leader arose.

Perhaps Starmer was as surprised as anyone else that no leader emerged before he became Prime Minister? It would certainly explain many observations of his 'personal style'.

  2. DJ - he certainly seems out of his depth, as does Reeves. If he was supposed to be a nightwatchman, maybe Streeting's way has already been smoothed.

  3. When he became leader the conservatives had a big majority and it would have been reasonable to suppose a labour government was a least two elections away; so best put in a nightwatchman who would be replaced after the next election defeat…

  4. dearieme - sounds like a Joe Biden problem

Anon - that would make sense, a dull nightwatchmen to take Labour through another defeat which might not be too bad.

  5. New edition of an old fave:

Tiers for souvenirs are all you've left me
And memories of the cash you gave and lent
I just can't believe you could forget me
After all those snappy suits on which we spent

Tiers have been my only consolation
But tiers can't mend broken specs I must confess
    Let's forgive and forget
    Turn our tiers of regret
Once more to tiers of happiness

  6. dearieme - ha ha, very good. What we need now is an AI whizz to turn that into a video of Ken Dodd singing it.
